The sanctuary was established in 1998 to care for rescued chimpanzees, educate the general public to the plight of chimpanzees, and assist members of the local island communities. The first documentary that I can point to that grabbed my interest in a different way was People of the Forest, a film about Jane Goodall’s research of chimpanzees in Tanzania over the span of 20 years.
